Our Research

content

Research within the Marine Spatial Planning team addresses global challenges using a  place-based approach. Our research integrates diverse data, knowledge, and values to support informed decision-making processes. We apply our research to real-world governance challenges, delivering practical solutions for ocean sustainability.

Locally, our research has directly informed the development of the Shetland Islands Regional Marine Plan, biosecurity strategies, conservation measures, protected area management, fisheries management, and active marine restoration.  Globally, our approaches have been adopted by decision-makers, influencing marine governance and sustainability practices worldwide. By bridging science, policy, and community voices, we support a resilient and thriving marine environment and ensure just outcomes for marine communities.

Seabed Habitats

We undertake research to expand our knowledge of seabed (benthic) habitats within Shetland’s 12-nautical-mile limit. From seagrass meadows to offshore mixed sediment, our research helps to understand habitat distribution, ecological roles, and the interactions between marine life and human activities.

Current Projects:

  • Restoring Shetland's Marlie Meadows
  • Shetland Islands Dominant Marine Biotope Map
  • Benthic Habitat Distribution within the Fair Isle DR MPA

People & Place

People in Shetland have a deep connection to the sea which is integral to Shetland’s cultural identity. Many people make a living from the sea but it is also important for recreation and social interaction.

We support the Shetland community to contribute to marine decision-making within Shetland and undertake research to understand the connections between people and place, and the integration of community values in marine management.

Current Projects:

  • Guiding Restoration and Enhancement in the Shetland Islands
